Red Minnow Run for Tarpon on the Treasure Coast

Today, we’re out in beautiful Stuart, Florida, in late August. The water is calm, and the fish are pushing closer to shore, feeding on a minnow hatch. This presents a perfect opportunity to showcase the effectiveness of artificial lures when live bait is scarce.

Joining me is Captain Ross Gallagher from Hogy Lures. We’re focusing on tarpon, those powerful and magnificent fish that put up a thrilling fight.

The Minnow Hatch Advantage

Traditionally, live bait is a go-to for tarpon fishing. However, with limited options like mullet or sardines available, we’re turning to artificial lures, specifically the Hogy Lure Pro Tail Series. These lures have been incredibly popular with our clients, and for good reason.

The tarpon are feeding on micro minnows, making the Pro Tail’s smaller profile (4.75″ and 5.5″) ideal. We start with the Hogey Pro Tail Eel in bone color, casting it near schools of minnows.

Topwater Tactics Triumph

As anticipated, the tarpon are aggressive. I toss an unweighted Original Series lure into a minnow school. The slow sink rate is irresistible, and a tarpon explodes on the surface!

This is just the beginning of an epic afternoon. We land several more tarpon, each a testament to the effectiveness of these artificial lures. We’re also using the 7-inch Original Series and the 7-inch HD UV Eel with Barbarian jig heads, adapting weights and retrieves to match the feeding behavior.

Going Beyond the Bite: Essential Gear

For those interested in tackling the Stuart tarpon fishery with artificials, here’s a quick breakdown of our go-to setup:

  • Lures: We primarily used the Hogy Lure Pro Tail Series in various sizes and weights (unweighted, 2oz, and 3/8oz to 1/2oz jig heads). Colors included bone, black, and bubblegum.
  • Leader: 50-60lb fluorocarbon leader is essential for strength and abrasion resistance.
  • Hooks: The Barbarian Swimbait Hook (10/0) and Barbarian jig heads (3/8oz to 1/2oz) provide the necessary strength for battling large tarpon.

A Fishery for All Seasons

As the sun starts to set, we reflect on a fantastic day, and the versatility of the Stuart fishery, offering opportunities for tarpon fishing year-round. This adaptability is particularly crucial when live bait is limited, making artificial lures a game-changer.
