Taming the East Coast Giants: Insider Tips for Inlet Tarpon with Capt. Chris Britton

Greetings from beautiful Stuart, Florida! Today we’re out chasing tarpon in the early June minnow run.

The scene is electric. The sun paints the sky with vibrant hues as we cast hefty swim baits into the fast-moving current of the inlet. My client battles a magnificent fish, the 5.5-inch Hogy Pro Tail Paddle dangling precariously from its jaw.

The Power of the Minnow Run

This time of year, the minnow run provides a prime opportunity to fish for tarpon in Stuart, FL. We leverage this natural phenomenon by using lures that mimic the fleeing baitfish. The Pro Tail Paddle, in its 5.5-inch size with a 3-ounce weight, is a perfect fit for these fast-moving waters.

The battle unfolds with the tarpon taking the fight deep. Our tackle is built for such challenges – a stout setup with braided line and a moderate fluorocarbon leader (around 60lb) for clear water conditions.

After an intimidating display of aerial acrobatics, we successfully release this massive 80-pound fish. It’s a testament to the resilience of these creatures and the effectiveness of our tactics.

Mastering the Swing Technique

Let’s delve into the “swing” technique we employ for inlet tarpon fishing with heavy swim baits. The key lies in precise casting and retrieve:

  1. Casting: Aim for an 11 to 8 o’clock position, casting up-current. This allows the bait to mimic the natural flow of the minnows being flushed out.
  2. Sinking: Let the bait sink for 3-5 seconds, mimicking a fleeing minnow struggling against the current.
  3. Retrieving: Maintain a slow and steady retrieve, sweeping the bait through the water column. Avoid erratic jerks; occasional pauses to simulate a wounded minnow can be effective.

Targeting Different Depths

By adjusting the sinking time (3-7 seconds), we can target tarpon at various depths. While some fish actively feed on the surface, others hold in the mid-water column. Adapting your retrieve allows you to present the bait in the strike zone regardless of the fish’s location.

An Unforgettable Experience

This trip has been nothing short of epic. My client skillfully battled the powerful tarpon, and we captured the entire fight on video. For anyone seeking an unforgettable tarpon adventure in Stuart, look no further than Grey Ghost Charters.
